Brazil (Brasil) should be on everyone's bucket list but it is huge, so choose an area to discover. Travel is done most efficiently by air, not car, bus or train...therefore my images here were all shot in the northeastern section of the country, specifically Fortaleza, Recife and Salvador. Although geographically close, each has its own local flavor and photographic opportunities. Outside of the tourist areas, ie. the beaches, you can find entirely different views of Brazil from the tour books. Near Fortaleza is the small community of Pacheco where I stayed for several days in the home of Frede and Inge with my cousin Lothar from Munich. From there we drove into the hills to visit a village where I'm sure they rarely see the light skin of travelers. A short drive from Recife is the historic district and the very colorful and photogenic town of Olinda. In Salvador we stayed in Praia Pedra do Sal, a beach village near Itapua that was nearly an hour by bus to the historic center of Salvador. If you visit here don't miss the chance to spend time at the Barracas, little beach huts that serve up the best of local catch, local drinks and music. Day or night you will not be disappointed. You can't see it all with 3 weeks in Brazil but it's a start and the Samba will call you back.
