Aside from my vintage vehicle collection, perhaps nothing else represents a time gone by as well as old gas pumps. Since the mid '80's I have spent countless hours on the road searching for and documenting these relics of an past era. Having worked in the movie biz for many years and on location in states from coast to coast, I would spend my weekends traveling the back roads and former main highways in hopes of finding these vintage pumps. The ones pictured here are from the 1950's when the look was art deco. The total collection numbers around 640 images and with the exception of the "Esso Station" are straight, unenhanced photos shot on film. While I continue to travel the back roads, it has been several years since coming across one of these gems of design...one of the last was actually in Germany. Frozen in time, the faces of these pumps still reflect the price of gas when they ended their service...imagine 25 cents a gallon! I would like to think that no one has a larger collection of gas pump pics...if so, let me know.
